Steven Wayne Mort, 50 of Pierceton, IN passed away at 9:59 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at South Bend Memorial Hospital as the result of an automobile accident. He was born on April 6, 1962 in Columbia City, IN the son of Rex D. and Mary Jane (Tenney) Mort.
He spent his lifetime in the Pierceton area graduating from Whitko High School with the Class of 1981, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and football. He attended Glenoaks College, Centerville, MI, with a basketball scholarship and graduated from Huntington College. For many years he worked on the Mort Family Farm. He also worked for Northern Lakes Electric, Warsaw, and for the past 15 years, he was a woodwork finisher for J. C. Hamman Construction, Leesburg. He loved to garden and was an avid golfer, deer hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Melissa D. McKinney, Pierceton; 4 children, Samantha A. (Chris Staley) Mort, Austin D. Mort, Blase M. McKinney and Aressa A. Tackwell all of Pierceton; father Rex D. Mort, Pierceton; mother, Mary Jane (Mike) Layton,FL; 1 granddaughter, Lexee Grace Staley, Pierceton; 2 brothers, Tim A. and Mark W. (Mary) Mort both of Pierceton; 2 nephews Justin (Alicia) Mort, Leesburg and Dillon Mort, Pierceton and 1 step grandfather, Ralph Thomas, Fort Wayne.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012 at the funeral home with Sharon Brockhaus, Certified Funeral Celebrant officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton. Memorial gifts may be given to the Mort Grandchildren Educational Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
