Janice R. Harig
September 22, 1933 - December 31, 2017

Janice Rose Harig was born on Sept. 22, 1933, in Whittemore, IA, daughter of Leo and Esther(Elbert) Walters. She grew up in Whittemore amongst her many relatives and attended Presentation Academy. She was united in marriage to Gene Harig on July 14, 1953 at St. Michael's Church in Whittemore.

Upon marriage they moved to Vermillion, South Dakota so Gene could attend the University of South Dakota. Gene's career took them to Newton, Iowa, Carmel, IN, Park Forest, IL, Columbus, OH, New Orleans, LA, and Naperville, IL before moving back to Whittemore upon his retirement in 1995. Jan and Gene made many friends along their journey that they travelled with and stayed in contact with no matter where they lived.

Jan's many loves included, Chicago sports teams, the Ohio State Buckeyes, her soaps, bowling, gardening, decorating, the many organizations that she belonged to and traveling with her beloved husband. She was always on the go and never wanted to sit still for long. Her greatest love, however, was the love she had for her family and friends.

Jan Harig died on Dec. 31, 2017 at the age of 84 at the home of her son, Steve, in Covington, LA, where she has lived the last few years.

She is survived by her five children, Steve (Beth) Harig of Covington, LA; Nancy Harig of Harahan, LA; Pam (Jack) Morgan of Columbus, OH; Mark Harig of Leland, IL; and Tom Harig of Marrero, LA; 7 grandchildren; Jennifer(Richard) Baudin: Joseph(Misty)Harig; Rachelle(Frank) Eiselen; Samantha Thom; Kiley(Anthony) Morgan-Myrick; Reid Morgan; and Maggie Harig; 10 great-grandchildren; Josh and Jasmine Harig; Joseph and Justin Newberry; Hannah and Hayden Eiselen; Lane Baudin; Trey and Trenton Colon; and Trinity Malone; brother-in-law, Jack Yeager and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Gene, parents; her brother, Durwood Walters; her sisters-in-law Betty(Tom) Gearty, and Patty Yeager; her brother-in-law, David Harig; and two infant children, Joseph and Joan.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice in her name or to the City of Whittemore to support the many activities she enjoyed in her hometown.
