Evelyn Marie Noe
November 24, 1958 - January 7, 2018

There were many great words to describe Evelyn Marie Noe, but not enough to say just how terrific of a lady she truly was. One to always put others first, Evelyn was always easy to talk with. She loved her family dearly and the greatest reward in her life was being a grandmother.

With President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon as the leaders of the United States, 1958 had an eventful year with just a few being the first successful American satellite, Explorer 1 being launched into orbit, the USS Wisconsin is decommissioned, leaving the United States Navy without an active battleship for the first time since 1896, the plastic hula hoop is first marketed, and NASA was formed. There was no news though that could compare to the great news on November 24, 1958 when Jerry and Stella L. (Hummel) Steigerwald announced the birth of their daughter,  Evelyn Marie in Fort Wayne.

As a child, Evelyn struggled to survive when at the age of four years old, she had a brain aneurysm that sent her into a comma and was in the hospital for almost an entire year. She had to relearn everything. She persevered and led an active childhood while growing up in Churubusco. She enjoyed playing volleyball while she attended Smith Green Community Schools but decided not to become a cheerleader after she fell in love with David J. Noe.  The two met at a church function at "The Root Cellar" and knew right away they were meant for each other.  The 120 lb. David got the courage to ask Evelyn's dad, Jerry for permission to marry his daughter.  The two would go on to be married on March 24, 1974 in Churubusco.

As a teenager she was a waitress at Marty J's in Churubusco. Evelyn took some college classes in nursing while she was an aid at Miller's Merry Manner in Columbia City and also worked at BRC and the Quonset in rural Whitley County before becoming a homemaker. 

Evelyn enjoyed bowling and playing air hockey with her husband. She may have been a very loving lady, but she loved to win and was very competitive.  As her daughters became old enough, she also enjoyed taking them roller skating.  Family meant a lot to her and she loved Thanksgiving and Christmas because that brought her family together and she loved cooking for them.

She was a great cook and baker.  Her chicken dinners, pot roast, turkey, mashed potatoes and lasagna are just a few dishes that her family will miss along with David's favorite desert, raisin pie.  She also had great homemade pizza, salsa and nachos. Evelyn enjoyed watching her Soap operas, Oprah, The Bold and The Beautiful and reading not only about the Amish and early pioneers, but also about Princess Diana and the Royal Family.

Life will never be the same for her husband, daughters and grandchildren when Evelyn Marie Noe, 59, of Huntington, Ind., passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, January 7, 2018 at her home. She is survived by her husband, David Noe; daughters, Mary Noe, of Huntington and Amanda Noe, of Fort Wayne; sister, Darlene (Mark) Foote; grandchildren, Diamond Rose Noe, Avionna Holmes, Dashawn Williams and Jacob Noe; brother, Jerry Steigerwald; sister, Susan Agler; brother, Billy (Whisper) Steigerwald; and former brother-in-law, Robert Agler. She was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Greggy Treece; an infant child; and grandchild, Marcus Jr.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018 at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Certified Funeral Celebrant Sharon Brockhaus officiating. Burial will follow at Christian Chapel Cemetery.
