Richard "Dick" Earl Weiss
August 20, 1930 - January 8, 2018

Richard Earl Weiss, 87, of Burlington, Iowa passed away peacefully January 8, 2018 at Burlington Care Center.
Richard was born August 20, 1930, the son of Ervin Herman Weiss and Julia Cecilia Huppert Weiss in Burlington, Iowa. He graduated from St. Paul Catholic High School in 1949 and from the Burlington School of Business in 1956. Richard served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1950-54 with the rank of Airman First Class.
After serving his tour of duty in Korea, Richard returned to Burlington. On September 4, 1954 he married Juawona Verlee Callaway at St. John Catholic Church in Burlington. During their 63 years of marriage in the Burlington area they raised three sons and one daughter.
Richard worked as the Business Manager and Vice President for the Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper for 40 years and retired on October 31, 1995. He was on the Burlington Steamboat Days Board of Directors for eight years where he served as president during 1970 and 1971. Richard was a member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club for over forty years, serving as their president in 1989 and 1990. He served as a Cub Scout Master at Sunnyside School during the 1960's, and was a member of the Jaycees and the Eagles. Richard and Juawona were season ticket holders for SCC basketball games for 33 years. He was a lifelong member of Divine Mercy Parish-St. John Catholic Church serving on the church council for six years.
Richard enjoyed spending time in the outdoors with his sons hunting, fishing, boating and trapping. After his retirement from The Hawk Eye he enjoyed trapping nuisance animals in the Burlington area for many years. He and Juawona enjoyed many years of traveling to Mexico in February. They enjoyed taking cruises to Alaska, traveling through the Panama Canal and also the Caribbean. For their 60th Wedding Anniversary they toured England, Wales, and Ireland. Spending time with his family was his passion, especially watching the grandchildren participate in sports, dance and pageants.
Survivors include his wife Juawona; three sons, Dennis (Theresa) Weiss of Bellevue, IA, Curtis (Janna) Weiss of Muscatine, IA and Scott (Sommer) Weiss of Burlington; one daughter, Michelle (Darren) Crandall of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Kristy (Jamie) Haxmeier, Cindy (David) Tiemessen, Heather Crandall, Ashley Crandall, Victoria Weiss, Dylan Weiss, Ellie Weiss and Emily Weiss; one great granddaughter Zoey Haxmeier; two brothers Robert (Barbara) Weiss of Reno, NV and James (Dana) Weiss of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Marilyn and one brother Wally.
The family would like to thank Burlington Care Center and Great River Hospice for the wonderful care he received during his short stay.
On Friday January 12 at 4:30 PM the Rosary will be recited at Lunning Chapel followed by visitation from 5:00-7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held on Saturday January 13 at 10:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John Catholic Church with The Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as celebrant. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard followed by graveside service at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. A luncheon will be served in St. John Catholic Church cafeteria following the graveside service.
