Clarence Martin Hammill, 92, of Union, IA died Nov. 8, 2014 at Oakview Nursing Home, in Conrad, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at Union Community Church, in Union. Pastor Rick Schill will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the church. The Conrad Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the arrangements. Clarence was born July 30, 1922, in Atkinson, NE, the son of Eddie L. and Undine Burley Hammill. He graduated from the Atkinson High School. He entered the United States Army Air Corps on December 31, 1942, serving as a radio technician in the European Theater of Operations during WWII. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1945, and was employed by the Federal-North Iowa Grain Company at Webb, IA. Clarence was married to Carole Woodford Schnirring, a widow with a young daughter, Kay, on December 31, 1946. The grain company moved him to Judd in 1948, where a second daughter, Mary, was born in Webster City in 1950. In 1951 Clarence moved to Whitten to operate the grain elevator there. Clarence began farming in the Union area in 1955; they moved to their farm south of Union in 1959, where he retired from farming in 2008, and where they resided until relocating to the Conrad Nursing Home last September.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Carole; daughters Kay (David) Schmidt of rural Conrad and Mary (Steve) Rund of rural Laurel; four grandchildren: John (Jen) Schmidt of Florissant, MO; Dan (Lisa) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; Jason (Erica) Schmidt of Runnells; Annie Novak (Thomas) Clough of Urbandale; twelve great-children: Meagan and Allison Schmidt, Florissant; Ben and Tony Schmidt, Cedar Rapids; Rachael, Laura, Emma, Joshua, Clara, Tabitha, and Johanna Schmidt, Runnels; Juliette Novak, Urbandale; and sister Luella Poessnecker, Atkinson, NE. Preceding him in death was his mother in 1926, his father in 1945, and his brother Tom in 1997.
