June 24, 1931 - December 30, 2017

Gertrud H. Tammen, 86, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W Main Street, in Marshalltown. Visitation will be Thursday, January 4, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., until the time of the services, at Anderson Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com


Gertrud was born on June 24, 1931, to Otto and Ida (Bochum) Schakat in Kaukehmen, East Prussia, Germany. She was raised in Tilsit, East Prussia, through age 13 until the end of World War II when her family fled from the invading Russian Army. They lived in refugee camps before settling in Leer, Germany, where her future husband lived. Gertud graduated high school in Leer and later completed nursing school there. In 1953, her fiance, Frank Tammen, immigrated to the U.S. In 1954, Gertrud immigrated and moved to Marshalltown. She and Frank were united in marriage on December 18, 1954, in Wellsburg, IA. She gained her United States citizenship in 1962. In her early years, Gertrud worked as a nurse at the Deaconess Hospital and Westwood Nursing Home in Marshalltown. She then worked for podiatrist Dr. Ray Samuel for many years before her retirement. Gertrud enjoyed knitting, reading, classical music, keeping up on the news and world events, and spending time at the family cabin in Minnesota.

Gertrud will be dearly missed by her three daughters: Dorie Tammen of Marshalltown, Ingrid (Jim) Haase of Morris, IL, and Linda (Bryan Fogg) Tammen, of Ames, IA; five grandchildren: Sam Brennecke of Marshalltown, Erin Faulkner and Kelly (Steve) Daniells of Chicago, IL, Josh (Amber) Courter of Melbourne, IA, and Kadie Osgood of Ames; two great-grandchildren, Gordy Daniells and Gavin Courter; a sister, Eva Krueger of Friedrichshafen, Germany; a brother-in-law, Wilfried Tammen of Germany; a niece Irene De Stefano of Germany, and a nephew, Roland Krueger of Germany. She is also survived by her dog, Heidi, and her cat, Mac. Gertrud was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, her parents, Otto and Ida, and a nephew, Reinhard Krueger.

She was working on knitting another blanket for one of the family pets before we lost her. We have several knitters in the family. (I am not one of them, sadly!)
