Edith Kendall

Edith Arlene (Coltrain) Kendall, age 91, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Centerville Specialty Care.Edith was born on September 5, 1926 to Fred and Mary Elizabeth (McCumber) Coltrain, who farmed east of Moravia, Iowa.  She attended rural Scottersburg School, and was very proud that she, as a 16 year old farm girl, graduated as valedictorian of Moravia High School with the Class of 1943.
 Following high school, she worked at Appanoose County Farm Bureau and Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Centerville, Iowa.  On January 23, 1946, Edith was united in marriage to William K. Kendall, and they moved to Des Moines, Iowa.  Together, they had a son who was born on August 15, 1947.  He passed away the following day, and was buried in the Old Moravia Cemetery.  The couple divorced in 1951.Edith was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Des Moines, Iowa from 1946 until her retirement in 1982.  After she retired, she moved to her home in Centerville to be near her sister and brother-in-law, Daphan Marie and Duane E. Wood of Rural Centerville, where she enjoyed her retirement years.Edith is survived by her sister, Daphan Marie Wood.  Edith was preceded in death by her dad on December 24, 1961; her mom on December 11, 1974; a brother-in-law, Duane E. Wood on June 2, 2005; and two brothers.Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday, January 22, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Jack Engle officiating.  Burial will follow the funeral service at the Old Moravia Cemetery in Moravia, Iowa.  Memorials have been established to Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.
