U.S. Veteran

Maynard Joseph Miller, 88, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

He was born September 12, 1929, near Anita, Iowa, the son of Otto and Georgia (Mullin) Miller. Maynard attended one room country school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Anita High School with the class of 1947.

In 1951, he married Shirley Paulson, who preceded him in death in 1969.

He helped with the family farm near Anita before serving in the US Army during the Korean War. Prior to serving in Korea, he received training in Japan. Following his discharge from the Army, he began employment with Walnut Grove Products in Atlantic, retiring in 1991.

In 1990, he married Carol Bennigsdorf Goetzinger and they lived in Atlantic until his death. They spent parts of many winters in Arizona. They did other traveling, with the highlight being a five week motor trip to Alaska in 1992. He had visited all fifty states and parts of Canada.           He was honored to be included on an honor flight to Washington, D.C. in 2013 with other Korean War veterans. A highpoint of this trip, was the fact that his granddaughter, Kristy, and great-granddaughter, Anna, who lived in D.C. at the time, were able to spend part of the day with him, ride on the tour bus with the veterans, and eat lunch with him.
