Luella J. Hayes
August 15, 1925 - February 1, 2018

Luella J. Hayes, 92, of Fort Dodge, died Thursday, February 1, 2018, at the Simpson Health Center.

A service honoring Luella's life will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10, at the Chapel of Deer Creek Apartments, with the Rev. Gary Snook officiating. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Luella is survived by her children, Sarah Hayes, Fort Dodge; Paul Hayes, Council Bluffs; Mark Hayes, Fort Dodge; and John Hayes, The Plains, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings, the Rev. Cleo Elsberry and Leona Nostrom.

Luella June Elsberry, the daughter of Amos and Julia (Hilsabeck) Elsberry, was born August 15, 1925, at Boone, Iowa. She graduated from Jordan High School in Boone County in 1943, and attended Drake University, from where she received her teaching certificate. Luella taught at Jordan Country School. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Knolton Furniture in Carroll Luella. Luella was united in marriage to Robert Winker and then later was united in marriage to Arthur Hayes. From 1954 to 1980, Luella was involved in starting churches for the Church of the Nazarene. Luella lived many years in Boone and Clarion before moving to Fort Dodge in 1986.

Luella was a member of the Nazarene Church, and the Women's Missionary Union. She worked as coordinator for the Deer Creek Chapel for many years. She enjoyed welcoming new residents to the Deer Creek Apartments and she published the Deer Creek Chapel Newsletter. She was well known for sending birthday cards to fellow residents and honoring residents with a personalized poem she had written when they had passed. Luella enjoyed writing poetry and was often published in The Fort Dodge Messenger.
