Delano B. Weber, 81, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2018, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2018, at Anderson Funeral Homes in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home. Private family burial will be at a later date. Memorials may be provided to Iowa River Hospice Home, 502 Plaza Heights Rd, Marshalltown, IA, or to his family for a scholarship in Del's name. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend who fiercely loved his family. Del, one of five children, was born November 3, 1936, in Elma, IA, to his parents, Mary Ann (Gebel) and Edward Matthew Weber. At an early age, he showed interest in architecture. Del built a club house attached to the back of his family's garage that became known as the sturdiest and most square building in town. He was on the varsity football, basketball, and golf teams, graduating from New Hampton High School in the class of 1954. Del's natural talent as a golfer took him to several tournaments around Iowa, including winning the Club Championship at the New Hampton Country Club. He later earned his degree in Architectural Engineering from Chicago Technical College. Del's first job after college was at an architectural firm in Waterloo, IA. Del and Carole were high school sweethearts who had no idea that their love would lead to a wonderful 56 years of marriage. They were married in 1961 in Waterloo. In 1966, Del co-established his architectural office in Marshalltown. Some of the firm's most recognizable accomplishments include Dack and Malloy Halls at the Iowa Veterans Home, the Marshalltown High School Auditorium, along with many schools, hospitals, and churches across the state and the Midwest. He practiced until 1993 when he retired due to his advancing multiple sclerosis. During his lifetime, Del held memberships in Optimist, Rotary, American Institute of Architects, Saint Mary's Church, Reserves Officer Association, as well as the Central Iowa Art Association where he served as President. He was also a member of the Building Operating Committee of the YMCA/YWCA. Some of Del's favorite hobbies were hunting, golfing, and sailboat racing. An active sailor, Del was happiest in the middle of Clear Lake, especially when racing with his favorite crewmate (Carole). Del loved giving family and friends rides on the sailboat, especially when the wind was strong enough to lift the hull into the air. A few screams of delight from his passengers would always make him grin as the spray would come over the bow soaking everyone in front of him. Before MS slowed him down, Del was active and always fixing something. To those who knew him best, Del could build or fix nearly anything. While others enjoyed relaxing by the lakeside, Del enjoyed always having a project to do, especially with his sailboat.
Del will be deeply missed by his wife, Carole; children Michelle (Dale) Schmitt of Johnston, IA, and Clark (Sonja) Weber of Beaverton, OR; grandchildren Anika Schmitt, Eric Schmitt, Emma Weber, Cole Weber; his sister, Marie Weber of Madison, WI; his sister-in-law, Joan Weber; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Del was preceded in death by his parents, sister Muriel Sheehy, brother Norbert Weber, brother Robert Weber, nephew David Weber, and niece Cheryl Sheehy.

I have very fond memories of the times that our families spent together in Marshalltown and in Clear Lake, where I can still see Del on his sailboat and my dad on his motor boat. "Carole, I remember how Joan enjoyed the trips to look at other auditoriums when she was in the group to see what others had done before they built the MHS Auditorium. And Del's word was sure respected as they went through the design process. I think they both put a full 10% into that project. "Del was a great member of the crew at the Thorson Brom Broshar Architects office in Waterloo in the late 50's and early 60's. We always enjoyed working with him and with him sharing his architectural expertise with the firm. We followed was pleased with his work when he left to start his own office and was sorry when we knew about his late health problems. Although he has been gone from Waterloo many years we will miss having a loved architectural competitor in Marshalltown. "
