In 1939, she matriculated with an Oxford School Certificate. She became a governess to the Bishop of Halifax's daughter. In 1941, she was conscripted into the Women's Auxiliary Air Force and served four years in various stations in the British Isles. In July 1945, in Chesterfield, England, she was married to Warren Harvey of the U.S. Army. In 1946, they returned to Marshalltown. Mary was a "War Bride". In marriage they raised nine children. Mary was a homemaker and loved to cook for family and friends. She enjoyed making jams and jellies. Her favorite dessert was "English Sherry Trifle" which she shared wither her family and friends. She volunteered for her church in many capacities and visited members in nursing homes. Mary was a member of the Britannia Club which was open to all women born on English soil. She loved to knit and made many afghans for all her children and grandchildren. She always had an English garden with roses being her favorite. When her children were all raised, she went to work at the Iowa Veterans Home in the dietary department and enjoyed all the residents and the friends she met there.

"I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to Mary's family. I was a good friend of her daughter, Liz. and also her daughter-in-law Julie. I'm sorry to hear of Mary's passing . Though I did not know her extremely well, when I did have the opportunity to run into her or visit with her when ever she came into the hospital, she was always up beat and pleasant. I believe Mary lived a very full life and was always proud of her heritage. I always enjoyed talking with her and listening to her British accent. A wonderful lady she will be missed."

Karl Putman wrote on Feb 10, 2018:

"To Mary's family: Karl and I are saddened to read about Mary. We are in Pensacola, FL. Just last night we saw Mary's picture in the Times-Republican. We used to live two blocks north of where most of you grew up. Our son Jim and Matt were good buddies. Mary and I were in Britannia Club together. I think it was in 1971 or 1972 that Mary invited me to join. Karl and I saw Mary at her 95th birthday party at Julie and Ken's. Mary was a loving and sweet lady. We will miss her. Please know that our thoughts are with all of you. Lovingly, Dorien and Karl Putman"
