Nancy Major
October 26, 1941 - February 6, 2018

Nancy Gates Major, 76, of Iowa City, formerly of Atlantic, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at The Bird House Hospice Home in Iowa City.

The adoptive daughter of John Carter and Lola (Wasmund) Gates, Nancy was born October 27, 1941, in Burlington, Iowa. Nancy grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, and graduated from Waterloo West High School. She also graduated from St. Lukes Nursing School and Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. On June 8, 1963, Nancy was united in marriage to Glenn Major in Sioux City. Following their marriage, they lived in Sioux City, Sac City, and moved to Atlantic in 1982. Nancy had worked as a registered nurse and nursing instructor at St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City and as a registered nurse at Loring Hospital in Sac City. She also worked as a social worker at Park View Care Center in Sac City and the Atlantic Care Center and Heritage House in Atlantic. Nancy retired from Heritage House in 2007. Nancy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic for over 30 years, Eastern Star, and was active in the Cass County Hospital Auxiliary. Following retirement, Nancy loved to travel and spend as much time as she could with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her children, Heather Major of North Liberty, Iowa, Dawn Major and her husband, Dan Lewbel of Plano, Texas, and John Major and his wife, Marcia of Holstein, Iowa; grandson, Erik Major, of Holstein, Iowa; and granddaughter, Taylor Major of Holstein, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glenn, and brother, Robert Gates.

At Nancys request a private family service will be held with burial in the Atlantic Cemetery.
