Richard Stanley Munsen
December 1, 1921 - February 5, 2018

Richard Stanley Munsen, 96, passed peacefully on Monday, Feb 5th at the Stratford Care Center. Born and raised in Story City by Serral and Belle Munsen, he was a dedicated life-long resident. He graduated from high school in 1939, studied engineering at Iowa State College, then decided to enlist in the Army Air Force. After earning his wings, he flew 22 missions in his B-17 Flying Fortress before being shot down over Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia. For 45 days he evaded capture by hiding in the rugged mountain terrain as told in his book Bail Out Over the Balkans. Dick was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. Upon returning to Story City, Dick joined his father at Munsen Chevy-Buick and married his high-school sweetheart, Katherine, daughter of Alfred and Anna Jacobson. They raised 5 children: Rick, Anne Marie, Sylvia, Paul and Craig. Dick and Kay were blessed with 3 grandsons, Roald, Misha, and Nicolas, and one great grandson, Kalyx. Dick touched many lives and will be missed dearly. A service will be held the afternoon of Sat, May 26th at St. Petri Lutheran Church.
