August 29, 1926 - February 10, 2018

Gunnar Dayle Young, 91, of Madrid passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the Madrid Home.
Gunnar was born August 29, 1926, in Ogden, IA, son of the late Gunnar and Edna Young. He received his education in country school and was later drafted into the United States Army serving his country overseas during World War II. Following his discharge, he began his employment with John Deere and Co. in Ankeny for 37 years until his retirement. He continued to stay active and worked for Sears and Van Wall John Deere in Madrid.
On January 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to Helen Francis at the parsonage in Forestville, Maryland. Gunnar and Helen made their home in the Madrid community all their married life and continued to make that his home following Helen's death on February 26, 2013.

Gunnar was an active member of the Madrid community where he was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, VFW Post 5060 of Madrid, Star Lodge # 115 and the Scottish Rite and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
In his free time, he enjoyed collecting and selling scrap iron, going to toy tractor shows, traveling and riding his John Deere bike around town.

Survivors include a daughter Nancy (Steve) Duling, a son Dennis Young, four granddaughters Traci LeMaster, Toni (Justin) Hamman, Amy(Will) Miller and Ashley Young and ten great grandchildren Landon, Zachary, Zoey, Tanner, Tyler, Trenton, Tristen, Taryn, Jaxon and Jacob and a special friend Doris Bright. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, a daughter-in-law Judy Bowers a brother Warren, and four sisters, Ruth Grimm, Verna Halverson, Marilyn David and Virginia Person.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018, at St. John's Lutheran Church with burial to follow in the Cassel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Sundburg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home with Masonic Rites at 7:00 p.m. by the Star Lodge # 115 of Madrid.

A memorial fund is being established.
