In loving memory of

Michael Russell
July 22, 1961 - February 11, 2018

Michael Russell, 56, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the MHP Hospital Emergency Room in Oskaloosa. He was born July 22, 1961, in Oskaloosa, the son of John and Lola "Kay" Russell. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1980. While in high school he worked at Holub's Greenhouse and Hy-Vee in Oskaloosa. Following graduation, he moved to Oklahoma and worked on a ranch which suited his rural sensibilities. He loved his time there and enjoyed reminiscing about the people he encountered and work that he did. He returned to Oskaloosa and went to work at Rolscreen (now Pella Corp.) until his health forced retirement in 1989. Upon returning from Mayo Clinic in 1990, he moved into Norwich apartments where he lived until his death.
Mike was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed hunting and target shooting. He loved being outdoors, touring gravel roads and visiting with his farmer friends. Mike also enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends at Norwich and the community there held a special place in his heart. He always had an ornery grin and a "howdy" for those he encountered. Being in a wheelchair did not stop him from doing the things he wanted to do, and he maintained his independence and activities for the rest of his life.
His family includes his mother, Kay Russell of Oskaloosa; his brother, Todd Russel of Clearwater, Florida; and his sister, Sarah Russell of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father.
As was Michael's wish his body has been cremated and no services are planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers please consider an act of kindness in Mike's honor.
