Harlen A. Kardel

Harlen A. Kardel, age 94, of Davenport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus with his wife of 71 years Lucille by his side. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, February 17th, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street, Davenport. The family will greet friends from 9:00 am until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
H.A. was born in 1924 to Robert and Elsie Jens Kardel, on the Scott County farm homesteaded by his family in 1856. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps after graduating from Davenport High School. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to farming as the 5th generation on the homestead. He married Lucille Kraft in Davenport on January 25, 1947. Together they brought up their two sons, Stephen and Ronald, on the family farm.
Harlen was active in the Iowa Cattlemen Association, The National Beef Board, 4-H and the Scott Co. Extension Council. In 1992 he was inducted into the Iowa Cattlemen's Association Hall of Fame. He and Lucille spent many winters at their home in Green Valley, AZ where he enjoyed hunting and golfing. Harlen was also honored to have gone on the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. In addition to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Harlen was a member of the American Holstein Heritage Society and the Scott County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; sons Stephen (Cindy) Kardel of Winnetka, IL and Ronald (Susie) Kardel of Walcott; grandchildren Joe (Kate) Kardel, Pete (Erin) Kardel, Abby (Andy) Kardel, Elizabeth (Tom) Kuhn, and Christopher (Kate) Kardel; 7 great grandchildren; and a sister Melva (Lee) Marolf of Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Loretta Paulsen and an infant brother.
