Lastly, he worked as a rural mail carrier in Maquoketa until his retirement in 1990.

Roy was active in the Maquoketa community with his time, talent and resources. He was a member of the Maquoketa Masonic Helion Lodge #36 AF & AM where he served as a past Master and later became a 32nd degree Mason and also joined the Scottish Rites, Yorkrite and KAABA Shrine. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Maquoketa where he served as a past Grand Chancellor. Some other memberships included the Maquoketa VFW Post #3633 O'Connor-Regenwether and the Maquoketa American Legion Post #75.

Roy enjoyed golfing and had been a longtime member of the Maquoketa Country Club golfing until age 90. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing and in his younger years, archery.
