"I am a high school classmate of Gary. We spent a lot of time together back then. I still think of him often and was saddened when I heard he had passed so young. One memory that stands out, a story you may not know, was Gary bought a Pontiac Tempest that he was very proud of. Awesome car. It was sold to him as having a 3 speed transmission. One day he discovered it had yet another gear, it was a 4 speed with a 326 V8 so was essentially a GTO. He was ecstatic as only Gary could be. Gary Dean Henricks, 66, of Dumont, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at his home in Dumont.
He was born December 21, 1951, in Eldora, Iowa, to Elmer and Bertha (Ehmen) Henricks. Gary graduated from Aplington High School in 1970, and then graduated from Reisch Auction College. He served his country in the United States Army from 1971 to 1977. Gary was united in marriage to Debra Oitzman on February 8, 1975, at the United Methodist Church in Dumont, Iowa. For the last 28 years, Gary worked as a sand crew foreman at Bruening Rock Products, formerly known as Greene Limestone/Allied Construction, based out of Charles City, Iowa. He was a member of the American Angus Association, American Legion and was affiliated with the New Hope Parish of the United Methodist Church - Dumont Center. Gary enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and figure 8 racing. He also enjoyed caring for his stock cows and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Gary had a sense of humor, told it like it was, and was a headstrong, hardworking man.
Gary is survived by his wife Debra Henricks of Dumont, son Todd (Holly) Henricks of Rockwell, daughter Tracy (Jeff) Steines of Ames, grandchildren Ava Henricks, Camden Henricks, Payton Steines, Tayt Steines and Bo Steines, sister Sharon (Ronald) Abbas of Aplington, brother Craig (Bernita) Henricks of Parkersburg, brother Kenneth Henricks (friend Michael Bacon) of Fort Dodge, brother Norman (Cindy) Henricks of Ackley and sister Norma (Bill) Dorn of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Bertha, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Gary's family.
