Fred Jewel Scott
January 26, 1938 - March 5, 2018

Fred Jewel Scott, 80, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away at home March 5th, after courageously fighting a long illness. True to his nature, he never gave up.

Affectionately known by his friends as "The Great One", and known by family as "Duke", Fred was born into modest means on January 26, 1938 in Jamestown, Indiana to Jewel "Jude" Owen Scott and Inez Imogene Woodrum, where he lived until moving to Muncie, IN in the 9th grade. He endured a difficult childhood but persevered and was a proud member of the famed Muncie Central basketball team that lost to Milan in 1954 (Hollywood made a movie about it) and then lost to Crispus Attucks by a single point in 1955. He was also a member of Muncie Central's Varsity golf team; and in his junior year was one of six students to make the National Honor Society. He also caddied at Delaware Country Club while in High School, where he became an "A" caddie.

Fred then enrolled at Indiana University, where he spent three semesters, before transferring to Ball State for one year. That's because he met the love of his life, Dina Eder, and they had 57 years together. He eventually returned to Bloomington where he later graduated from IU. In an era of no student loans, it took Fred 6 years of working several jobs to pay his own way through college.

After moving to L.A. in 1962, Fred worked in pharmaceuticals and for Scott Paper before returning to Indiana. He then entered the Life Insurance business in 1964 when he joined the Kaufman Agency at Indianapolis Life. Eventually, Fred joined Manulife, where he was the local "Man of the Year" nearly every year and eventually became President of Manulife's National "Agents Advisory Council", the company's top distinction. Every year, Fred qualified for and eventually became a lifetime member of both the Million Dollar Round Table and the Top of the Table, the industry's highest award. He then founded his own agency, The Scott Group, and he became a national leader in the life insurance business. He was on multiple national advisory boards, and he fulfilled his lifelong dreams in his chosen profession. He was fond of saying, "After entering the Life Insurance business, I never had to work another day in my life, because I just loved selling insurance".

Fred built an amazing life around golf and selling insurance, and he used both as a vehicle to support many charities, none more than the local chapter of Big Brothers. Fred chaired the annual Big Brothers golf tournament for 20 years, helping to make the local chapter the #2 most successful in the county for many years.

Fred "collected many golf clubs" as he was a 39 year member at Crooked Stick Golf Club; 36 year member at Hillcrest CC; Founding member at Sagamore Golf Club; member at East Lake Woodlands (Tampa); and past member of CCI, Green Hills, and Delaware CC.

Fred's entire family would like to thank Dr. Timothy Story, as well as his many caregivers and nurses, many who became friends and came to love Fred, to no one's surprise.

Fred leaves behind: Wife Dina; Son David (Anne); Daughter Heather; Grandchildren Austin Kinnett, Jackson Scott, Duke "Ollie" Scott, and Georgia Scott.

A Celebration of Fred's life will be held on Sunday, March 18th at Hillcrest Country Club, from 2-6pm with heartfelt words and stories at 3:30pm.
