Herbert O. Oettchen, 85, of Gladbrook, IA, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Friday, March 16, 2018, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 15, 2018, also at the Peace United Church of Christ. Anderson Funeral Homes of Gladbrook has been entrusted with arrangements. Herbert was born on March 27, 1932, on a family farm in rural Lincoln, IA, to Otto and Selma (Engel) Oettchen. He graduated from Gladbrook High School. Herbert was united in marriage to Caroline Dettmer on June 12, 1953, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. They were blessed with four children. Herbert proudly served his country in the U.S Army from 1953 to 1955. After returning from the military, he farmed locally for 50 years. Herbert and Caroline enjoyed traveling to places like Germany, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and spent 10 years wintering in Arizona. He really enjoyed everything involving John Deere tractors, such as tractor rides, antiques, and collectibles. Herbert was a member of the Two Cylinder Club, Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook, and the American Legion.

Herbert will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years, Caroline; his four children, Debra (Richard) Bureker of Fort Collins, CO, Karen (Boyd) Jones of Farmington, MN, Cristy (Mark) Pilcher of Clarence, IA, and Randy (Tamara) Oettchen of Gladbrook, IA; 10 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Walter and Warner Oettchen, and a sister, Mary Appelgate.
