"John had a great sense of humor and will be remembered by many. RIP and our sincere condolences to Phil. Suzan Z. Apaydin and Juan M. Soberanes V."
John Patrick Tinley, 65, of Essex, Iowa passed away at his home with his beloved dog Elliott by his side, on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
John grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1970. He graduated from Simpson College with a BA in History in 1975 and went on to pursue a BA in Secondary Education from the University of Wyoming and master's degree in Counseling Education from the University of Wyoming. He was a substance abuse counselor and therapist in Lander, WY., and in Shenandoah.
The biggest joys of his life were his wife, Pam, his two daughters, Melissa and Emily, and his dog, Elliott. He had countless friends everywhere he went, and often made people smile and laugh. He loved telling stories, and talking about the good-old days of growing up in Shenandoah and of his college days at Simpson. He was a very sentimental man. He was a big Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed ribbing the Husker fans.
Proceeding John in death were his parents John and Louise Tinley of Shenandoah (Owners of The Shenandoah Evening Sentinel), and his wife Pam in 2012. Survivors include daughters Melissa Davidson of Boise, ID and Emily Cooper and husband Matt of Jackson, WY.; and his brother Phil Tinley of Laguna Woods, CA., and many other relatives and friends.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to People For Paws 809 W Valley; Shenandoah, IA 51601.

"From our kindergarten playground at old Forest Park school, on to Nishna Road school, Cub Scouts, the old 5th &6th grade building, junior high and both the old and new high schools, we were friends, allies, and occasionally co-conspirators. John, you were a major "Factor" in my life and now the tears will fall. Until we can laugh together again.. Bill JOhnson "
"I will always treasure the great memories that John "The Factor" and I built together; he was truly a larger-than-life character whose stories told so much about the man and the observations that he made about the world. From earliest days in middle school to the plans we made to get together t this year's Shenandoah reunion, John was always someone i looked forward to seeing. The ranks of our "Porch Crew Five" have now shrunk by one more, but the memories will live on forever. John, you are with us always and you will remain a huge part of my life's story - through thick and thin, our stories will always collide and I will hear your laughter at every turn. "
