Gary Symonds, 79, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018, in Treynor, Iowa.
Gary was born February 11, 1939, in Cumberland, Iowa, to Francis and Arlene (Schrader) Symonds. He attended school in Anita and graduated from the Anita High School in 1957. As a senior in high school, Gary received the Outstanding Citizenship Award.
On June 21, 1959, he married Joann Dorsey at the Anita United Methodist Church.
He was a feed salesman for Walnut Grove for 34 years. After retiring from Walnut Grove, he worked part-time for Oathoudt Farm Supply in Atlantic. Gary was a resident of Cass County for most of his life.
He enjoyed golf, cribbage, crossword puzzles, gardening, yard work, and watching westerns on TV. Gary was a longtime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. His most important time spent anywhere, and his greatest pride and joy, was his family.
Gary will be remembered as a loving husband, an extraordinary father, an adored grandfather and great-grandfather, and a friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Arlene Symonds, and a brother, Jim Symonds.
Gary is survived by his wife, of 58 years, Joann Symonds of Atlantic, IA; two daughters, Kelly (Jack) Hendrix of St. Joseph, MO, and Stacy (Mike) Gray of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Nathan (Katie) Glynn of Lee's Summit, MO, Casey Glynn of Omaha, NE, Brent (Renae) Gray of Omaha, NE, Kaylee Gray and her friend Russell Long of Omaha, NE; three great-grandchildren, Golden, Harrington and Matilda Glynn of Lee's Summit, MO and grand-dog Charlie; two sisters, Barb (Leland) Nelson of Anita, IA and Carolyn Symonds of Anita, IA; an aunt, Lois Carlisle of Griswold, IA.
Visitation with family will be from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., with the funeral starting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the family's wishes.
