Jewel G. Blahnik

Jewel Gail Blahnik, 100, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Accura Healthcare in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W Main Street, Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 1:00 until the time of the services, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Congregational Church in Marshalltown. Jewel was born on September 13, 1917 in Freeport, IL. She graduated from Dixon High School in Dixon, IL. In 1938, she graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, with a bachelor's degree in music. On June 9, 1940, she married Richard C. Blahnik in Dixon, IL. They resided in Cedar Rapids until 1950. Jewel was a public school music supervisor for several years, and was a violinist with the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra while living in Cedar Rapids. In 1950, Richard and Jewel moved to Marshalltown and established Dick's Auto Supply, which they owned and operated until the business was sold in 1978. She was a member and past president of the Diaconate of the First Congregational Church. She was also past president of the Women's Fellowship and a long-time member of the church choir. Jewel was a member of the Tu Larcul Club, Amity, the American Legion Auxiliary, YWCA, and a former member of the American Association of University Women, and the Elmwood Country Club. In retirement following the death of her husband, Richard, Jewel was a longtime resident of the Embers Retirement Community in Marshalltown. While there, she made many friends. In addition she organized a prayer band to pray for the residents of the Embers. Jewel was a devout believer in Jesus Christ. She was also a very devoted wife and mother.

Jewel is survived by her son, Richard C. (Mitzi) Blahnik, Jr.; nephews Brent (Linda) Auman, Jeff Auman, and Don (Jeannette) Auman; and nieces Nancy Auman (John Boomhower) and Susan Auman. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Jeanette Auman. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Richard C. Blahnik, Sr., and three brothers, Herbert Auman of Phoenix, AZ, Hubert (Shirley) Auman of Sterling, IL, and Ned Auman of Belvidere, IL. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Earl and Minnie Auman.
