"Marj was such a wonderful person. I've known her since I was 10 when her parents moved to the farm just west of us. Her sister, Marilyn, took me to activities at the country school where Marj taught and that was quite an experience from the big school of MINGO!!! Then when Marj was expecting Steve, Marilyn and I helped count her contractions before she'd agree to go to the hospital! Then when my 2 brothers and I lived out-of-state she allowed my parents to become surragate grandparents to her 5 children as my parents and her parents were very good friends. She will be missed. "

Marjorie Avis Pierce, age 90 of Colfax, died Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton. The daughter of George and Margaret (Lewis) Hill, Marjorie was born on July 28, 1927, in rural Colfax. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1945. On December 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to Eugene Pierce in Des Moines, Iowa. Marjorie was a lifelong resident of the Colfax area and a member of the First Baptist Church for the past 54 years. She was a country school teacher in rural Colfax for many years. At church, she taught Sunday school and served on several committees. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and baking, but her greatest love was attending her grandchildren's activities and spending time with her family. Marjorie was a selfless woman who was always taking care of others. She dedicated her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to many.
Those left to honor her memory include her children; Ronda (Patrick) Teed of Colfax, Rodney (Sheryl) Pierce of Colfax, Margena (David) Brown of Perry, and Steven (Jodie) Pierce of Douds; daughter in-law, Lisa Pierce of Newton; 16 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Harold Hill of Colfax and a sister, Marilyn (Doug) Byal of Hiawatha. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene in 1983; her son, Scott Pierce; her granddaughter, Dana Curtis and her brother, Harvey Hill.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. Memorials may be directed to the Marjorie Pierce Memorial Fund which will be distributed for the betterment of the Colfax Community.
