Wilbur Harris Bates, 83, of Soso, born November 11, 1934, passed away on April 11, 2018, at South Central Regional Medical Center.
Visitation will be held at Memory Chapel on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with services to follow at 3 p.m. Interment will be at Union Line Cemetery. Bro. Kenny Morris and Bro. Roy Crouch will officiate.
Mr. Bates was retired from South Central Regional Medical Center where he was employed as a security guard. In later years he would jokingly tell his family that he was "going to his office" and would then go to Wal-Mart and sit on a bench to people watch and greet those he knew.
Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mildred O. Bates; father, Willie Bates; mother, Mellie Bates; daughter, Sandra B. Parker; sisters, Maxine Rivers, Jestine Skipper, Bonnie Sue Roney, and Eloise Matthews; and brothers, William S. (Buck) Bates and Charles Bates.
Survivors include his son, Robert Bates (Cyndie) of Soso; daughter, Lottie Tucker (Mark) of Laurel; sisters, Dorothy Holifield of Laurel, Helen Stephens of Heidelberg, and Willie Grace Reynolds of Pensacola, FL; brother, Paul Bates of Pearl; and special friend, Carolyn Clark. Also surviving him are his grandchildren, Steven Parker, Daniel Tucker, Matthew Tucker, Mary Beth Bates, and John Roberts Bates; and great grandchildren, Blake Parker, Noah Tucker, Maggie Tucker, Katie Tucker, and Trace Tucker.
Pallbearers will be John Robert Bates, Mark Tucker, Daniel Tucker, Steven Parker, Dr. Glenn McGee, and Andy Stringfellow.
