MUSCATINE, Iowa -- David L. "Big Dave" Morrison, a former resident of Muscatine, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 20, 2018, in Florence, South Carolina.
Visitation will be from 3 until 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, in Muscatine. Cremation has been fulfilled. There will be a private family ceremony at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be sent to the Muscatine Humane Society.
David was born on April 19, 1947, in Omaha, Nebraska, the only child of Richard E. and Juanita E. Montgomery Morrison. He was raised in Cedar Rapids, and later resided for most of his years in Muscatine, before moving to Florence, South Carolina after losing his home to a house fire in 2015. In 1965, Dave graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, in a class of 555 and then went on to study chemistry and math at the University of Iowa from 1965-1967. He had two previous marriages to Doneth K. Zipsie and Nancy Bradley prior to finding the love of his life, Nyla Beauseigneur Anson, whom he married on January 2, 1980, in Honolulu, Hawaii. This was a day Dave cherished and often spoke of, right up until his recent passing.
Dave was a larger than life man who was not only brilliant but had the best sense of humor, as his friends and family can attest to! He loved all sports and was extremely knowledgeable about them inside and out. He coached women's softball and enjoyed his days of bowling where he was a stylish athlete indeed! Dave was an avid NASCAR fan and had attended many races throughout the years, something he enjoyed a great deal with his family. He was known for his fascination with the latest and greatest electronic gadgets and was a collector of many things such as his immense coin collection as well as unique presidential memorabilia. He was a proud supporter of the Foreign Exchange Student program, hosting three students he and Nyla became very close with; Noriko, Suzuko and Akiko. He and Nyla loved their pets so much and they were a very big part of their lives throughout the years. Other than his deep love for his beloved wife Nyla, Dave's commitment to his family was something to behold. Although his family was through his marriage to Nyla, his love and pride was deep and meaningful.
His career began at Grain Processing Company in Muscatine, in July of 1968 to September, 2000 in Quality Assurance. He was the founder and president of GPC-KFI-VII Credit Union in Muscatine, from September of 1979 to June of 2008 when the GPC Credit Union merged with Communications & Catholic Credit Union where he was the branch manager until April of 2012. The credit union then changed to Bent River Community Credit Union where he was the branch manager until officially retiring in April of 2014.
He is survived by his step-children, Kelly and Bill Merchant of Florence, South Carolina, Steve and Cheryl Anson of Muscatine, Greg & Becky Anson of Taylor Ridge, Illinois, and Doug Anson & fiancé, Stephanie Stych, of Muscatine; grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Jason (Ally) Salek, Brian Salek, Melissa & John Odom, Sam Merchant, Summer Merchant, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton (Amber) Anson, Jake Anson, Mr. and Mrs. Damon (Sarah) Anson, Ian Anson, Alex Sellers and Miyah Sellers; and great grandchildren, Francis Salek, Jennie Odom, McKenzie Odom, Madison Odom, Sumayah Andrews, Xavier Eller, Naiyana Eller and Cyrus Anson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nyla on March 10, 2010.

"Dave was very loved by all. He was always so sweet, giving me a little gift now and then when I'd pick up the boys, just because. Thoughts and prayers to the entire family. Rest in peace Dave. We can all know he is happy that he is now back alongside with Nyla. Two very special people."
