Douglas "Muggins" R. Smith
June 15, 1957 - April 24, 2018

Douglas R."Muggins" Smith, 60, of Martinsburg, NE passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca, NE with Father Andrew L. Sohm officiating. Burial will be in Calvary at South Creek Cemetery in rural Ponca. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 P.M., with a prayer service at 7:30 P.M. on Friday, April 27, 2018 at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca.

Doug was born on June 15, 1957 in Wayne, NE, the son of Desmond and Martha (Koch) Smith. He grew up on a farm in rural Allen and graduated from Allen High School in 1975. Doug married Susan Dohma on April 18, 1980 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca. They settled in Martinsburg and were blessed with 3 children.

Doug worked for the Dixon County Noxious Weed office for 34 years. He also operated a family cow-calf operation for many years.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca and the Knights of Columbus. On the regional and national level, Doug served in various capacities for the Nebraska and North American Weed Control Association, serving as president of the Nebraska Chapter twice. Doug volunteered for Nebraska Game and Parks, teaching Hunter Safety for over 30 years. He also served as a board member and shotgun safety instructor of the Outdoor Expo, served on the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Dept., was a water system operator for over 20 years and served as Chairman of the Village Board. He also played softball for "The Burg" for many years.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, hunting and fishing with his children, watching Husker football and the Minnesota Twins, and especially spending time on the farm.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Smith of Martinsburg, NE; children, Katie (Tyler) Uthof of Ponca, NE, Brent Smith of Omaha, NE and Blake Smith of Vermillion, SD; grandsons, Alex and Jase Uthof; brothers, Desmond Smith, Jr. of Scribner, NE, Terry (Gayle) Smith of Colchester, VT, Dean (Marlene) Smith of Allen, NE, Bob Smith of Beatrice, NE, Lin (Mary Lou) Smith of Ponca, NE, Randy (Tonia) Smith of Delta Junction, AK, and Dennis (Theresa) Smith of Yankton, SD; sisters, Chris (Bill) Micek of Columbus, NE, June (Bob) Grosvenor of Newcastle, NE, Shellee (Jeff) Heinemeyer of Yankton, SD; sister-in-law, Mickey Smith of Sioux City, IA; mother-in-law, Audrey Dohma of Ponca, NE; brothers-in-law, Richard (Joni) Dohma and Kevin Dohma (Julie Sydow) all of Ponca, NE; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Desmond and Martha Smith; brothers, Richard and Alan Smith; sister, Marsha Smith; father-in-law, Donald Dohma; and sister-in-law, Kim Dohma.

The family would like to give special thanks to the ICU nurses at Sanford USD Medical Center and Ava's House (Hospice Care).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for designations to be made at a later time.
