Debra A. Lampkins, age 71, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by immediate family including Shelonda White, Antionette Jones and Marletta Taylor on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Debra, the oldest of four children, was born in San Antonio Texas on January 18, 1947. She was preceded in death by her parents Ollie Ben Levison and Melvin L. Howard her beloved son Adrian "AJ" Lampkins. Debra is survived by her siblings Laura, Kenneth, Aaron and her niece Dante'.
In 1968 Debra married, career army serviceman, Melvin Lampkins, however, they are currently divorced but have remained good friends over the years. They resided in Denver, Colorado and Honolulu, Hawaii before taking permanent residence in Indianapolis. Left to mourn her loss but to praise her life are her children Robert (Shelonda) White Jr., Vanessa Lampkins and Brooks Lampkins. Grandchildren Brandyn, Ericka, LaKelila, Kelli, Keishana, Devon, Kristian, Candice, Robert III, Javon, Jalen, Khaliya, Khalani, Dechon, TruVaughn, Elyse and a host great-grandchildren.
Those who knew Debra can attest to the fact that her faith, determination, activism, and caring nature is why she sought employment in agencies devoted to serving the community.
During her professional career Debra was employed at agencies such as the YWCA, Indianapolis Urban League, the March of Dimes and 7001 of Indianapolis. She served on the Board of Directors of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Intervention Project, Minority Mental Health Advisory Council, United Negro College Fund, Minority Substance Abuse Consortium and was the Founder and Chairperson for the Women of Color Dialogue. Her diverse background also includes working in the field of substance abuse and family welfare.
While employed at Martin University Debra became Co- Director of the K through 12 Project. Notably, she used this opportunity to earn her Bachelor Degree and graduated Cum Lade with her Masters of Arts Degree.
Continuing her need to serve, Debra became employed as a Family Case Manager II for the Department of Children Services. Her caring spirit and involvement working on behalf of children and families led her to ultimately become a Foster Parent dedicating her time by enriching the lives of families in need. More recently, Capitol City Family Education Services used her skills as a Family Case Manager to help ensure the quality of family counseling and education.
Debra is a Christian and a member of Light of the World Christian Church for more than 40 years. She currently serves as an Armor Bearer with the Women of Discipline Ministry.
In her last days Debra was clothed in the full Armor of God as he prepared her way home. Ephesians 6: 10-18 (NIV) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Debra will be remembered an amazing woman, loyal to her family and friends and an avid seeker of kindness and humility. If you have ever talked with Debra, her parting words to you were usually "Bless You" or "Be Blessed."
She truly will be missed. Rest peacefully our Beautiful Angel.
