"Don must have rented from my grandparents at 17 N Mill St. My brother Tim Berschens enjoyed visiting with him when we were over. I vaguely remember him but I know Tim had kept in touch with him throughout his life. Everlasting peace to both of them."

"Don Cowling rented a room in the house next to ours during the years when I was a junior high and high school student (1955-1961). I never knew his age, but after reading his death notice I learned he was nine years older than me. During those years I believe Don was employed at the UW Enzyme Lab on Old University Avenue. I assumed he was a scientist, but I never knew for sure. He was quiet and kept to himself. I recall that he was interested in pistols and target shooting. I believe he developed the skill to make his own bullets. I seem to believe he served as a part-time Warden during one hunting season or another. I looked up to him because he frequently greeted me in the neighborhood, and knowing my deep interest in baseball he was willing to play catch with me every now and then. One time he invited me to join him when he went target shooting. I believe we went to a quarry somewhere outside of Madison where he set up either cans or bottles as targets. I had never shot a pistol before and immediately noted how loud it was. When I went away to college my parents moved from that neighborhood and I never saw Don again. I regret that I didn't have contact with him again. I have fond memories of those years including my interactions with Don. May his memory be for a blessing. Merle Sweet, Madison, WI"
