Valeria Joyce Bloch

Valeria Joyce Bloch, age 82, of Waterloo, died Monday, May 14, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born September 30, 1935 at the family home in rural Fayette County, Iowa, the daughter of Leslie and Esther (Fink) McLaury.  Valeria was a graduate of Fairbank (IA) High School and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo.  She was united in marriage with Donald Albert Bloch on June 2, 1957 in Fairbank and they shared their lives together for nearly 56 years.  Donald preceded her in death on February 9, 2013. Valeria was employed at Rath Packing Co. as a stenographer and later at Waterloo Community Schools for many years, retiring as an administrative secretary.  She was a faithful, active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo and was an avid quilter who loved to sew with her quilting sisters at church.  Valeria liked to cook for her family and also one of the famous "Grace Pie Ladies" known for her delicious homemade pies.  She was a fan of Iowa State and Iowa sports, the Chicago Cubs, enjoyed playing cards with cousins and church friends and fishing for trout in northeast Iowa.  Most of all, Valeria was a dedicated wife and mother, who treasured time spent with her family.  She left an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched and loved. Survivors include 2 sons, David Bloch of Polk City, IA and Darren (Kathleen) Bloch of Ames, IA; 2 daughters, Diane (Steven) Buck of Waterloo and Vikki Jo (Eric) Bixby of Allison, IA; 11 grandchildren, Daniel Bloch, Izzak Bloch, Hannah Bloch, Alex Buck (fiancé Meghan Olausen), Reece (Emily) Buck, Cale Buck, Tyler Bixby (fiancé Grace McLaughlin), Holly Bixby, Madyson Bixby, Zach Kupitz and Kelsey Kupitz; and a brother, Eldon (Virginia "Ginny") McLaury of Fitchburg, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter-in-law, Katherine Bloch.
