MEMORIALS: Elmer & Claire Watson Scholarship Fund - Elmer C. Watson High School, EMS-ISD and Saginaw United Methodist Church(SUMC) Endowment Fund

Leila Claire Jones Watson was born in Tuscola in West Texas, February 10, 1922. Claire's parents were Elmo and Ruby Jones, West Texas pioneers in ranching and farming. Her grandfather Jones was a real pioneer and one of the first sheriffs of Dallas County.

Claire graduated from McMurry College in Abilene where she met her husband of 53 years. Claire and Elmer married on Christmas Day of 1943 during WWII, when Elmer had a one day leave from the U.S. Navy. After the war, they moved to Petersburg in West Texas where Elmer was a school teacher and later a principal.

When her children were at home beginning in 1952, Claire established and ran a Kindergarten from her home before it was offered in public schools, the original "Home School Mom". Later Claire began a long career in public education, first as a teacher, and later as a librarian.

The family moved to Saginaw in 1963 where both Elmer and Claire worked for the Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD. They were very active in Saginaw United Methodist Church and Saginaw community.

In 1987, Claire retired joining Elmer in a busy life: traveling, church activities, creating crafts, quilting, playing bridge and golfing as well as spending time with friends and family.

Claire continued serving on church committees and was honored in 2011 as SUMC's Exemplary Woman. She never gave up her love for bridge, book clubs, quilting, and above all remained a devout Texas Rangers fan.

She was preceded by husband, Elmer Watson in 1998
