Barbara H Helveston
March 17, 1936 - May 29, 2018

Indianapolis - Barbara H. Helveston age 82 of Indianapolis IN, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2018. She was born in Bay City, Michigan to the late Florian H. and Arlene (Barton) Hiss on March 17, 1936. Barbara graduated from the University of Michigan in 1958, and Butler University with an MS in 1966 and an EdS in 1975. She taught second grade in Bay City, Indianapolis, and Minneapolis and served as a counselor at Westlane Middle School 1975-1980. She carried out volunteer activities at St Mary's Child Center, Cross Roads, The Children's Museum Guild, St. Margaret's Guild, and the 500 Festival. She was a member of the Indianapolis Woman's Club and served with distinction as a docent at the Indianapolis Museum of Art for two decades.

Barbara was married to Eugene M. Helveston for 59 years who survives her. She is also survived by her daughters Martha (David) Plager, with grandsons Henry and Charlie, and Lisa (Derek) Sprunger, granddaughter Caroline and grandson Frederick.

Family was the guiding spirit of Barbara's life. Her love and support for her husband was unconditional as was her joy for the lives and accomplishments of her daughters and grandchildren. Harbor springs at any season and great lakes boating accompanied as always by her beloved dogs were highlights of Barbara's life. After the girls finished high school Barbara travelled with her husband to more than 30 countries worldwide not necessarily to the garden spots but instead as a companion and supporter to places where the need for medical assistance was foremost.

Visitation will be held on Sunday June 3, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street. A service will be held Monday, June 4th at 11:00 am in the Chapel at Marquette, 8140 Township Line Rd., Indianapolis, IN.
