In loving memory of

Catherine Squires
September 29, 1926 - June 9, 2018

Catherine Ann " Kitty" Squires, 91 of Winona, died Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Lake Winona Manor.
Kitty was born September 29, 1926 in Winona to Otto and Katarina "Katie" (Obermeyer) Hoermann. On December 20, 1947, Kitty married Budd G. Squires at St. Matthews Church. Together they built their home on Gilmore Avenue where Kitty lived for 70 years. She grew up as an only child but married into a large family, whom she became close with. She was very proud of her German heritage and would visit friends and relatives in Germany and loved speaking and being German. She would often cook a German meal for her family. She was strong in her Catholic faith. Her prayer book and rosary were always close by. She prayed for each of her family members every day and no one left her house without being blessed with holy water.
Her true passion in life was being a wife, mother and grandmother. Kitty enjoyed reading, cooking, swimming, travel and playing cards with her longtime card club. She also loved animals - especially dogs, cats and birds.
She is survived by one daughter, Teresa and her husband, Terry Olson; son, Ryan and his wife, Lucy Squires; grandchildren, Meg Olson, Peter Olson, Katie (Matt) Heaney, Anna (Jim) Jarvis, Katrina (Chris) Sabino and Sarah Squires; great-grandchildren, Aidan & Alaina Heaney, Lily & Matthew Jarvis and Vinny & Joey Sabino. She was preceded in death by her husband, Budd and grandson, Christopher Squires.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, June 14, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Reverend James Berning officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m., until the time of the service in the Visitation Commons at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Private family burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Winona Area Humane Society or your local humane society.

"I Am so sorry to hear of Kitty?s passing.. I have so many great memories of her. She drove car pools loved her dogs and made the best apfel Kuchen. She was also a friend of my dad?s when they were kids. She was such a good daughter to gramma just as teresa has been a great daughter to her. I remember her calling our first dog magdellina....her name was Maggie. She sprinkled everday with a bit of her German culture. I loved her laugh and smile. I will never forget my best-friends wonderful mother"

Cindy Dosier wrote on Jun 11, 2018:

"There are so many great memories of being with Kitty. But the image that always comes to mind when I think of her, is her happily serving others in the kitchen. She was like a short order cook, making sure that everyone had exactly what they wanted and needed, cooking things special for each person that was there. Kitty's love for family and animals was so evident. Her eyes would light up when her grandchildren came to visit or there was a visit from one of her animal friends. I will miss her. Cynthia Dosier"

"Oh Dear Kitty, you meant so much to me. I always called you my "2nd Mother". You were always there for me from the time I was born on. You would always be willing to take me swimming to St Mary's Pool every summer. You taught me so much about swimming and diving. You brought me to school everyday in Middle School. How I loved riding in your "Spirit of 76" Chevy. When I got my new Schwinn bike when I was ten, you were the first person I called to go for a ride with me. We ended up crashing into each other that day. I had a big dent in my bike from that day on. You don't know how much it meant to me to have that dent as a reminder of our days riding together. I never had a babysitter when I was young. If my parents were to go out someplace, which was rare, I went over to your house and would be with you, Bud and Grandma. As I reflect back on your life, you were one of a kind. Such a gently soul. You and I shared a love of animals, I have saved many of the cards you gave me as they always had animals on them, whith your special handwriting. Your Birthday is the day before mine, 40 years apart. In the last 25 years I always bough you a card up in Grand Marais. I went from store to store looking for that "perfect" card for you! I know you are at peace with your dear "Buddy and Grandma". RIP my dear Kitty, until we meet again..."

"It seems that I have known Kitty my whole life! She was a very special friend and neighbor to my sister, a proficient 500 card playing buddy of mine, and a sweet and gentle friend to every dog, cat, bird or any other living thing she encountered. Teresa, Ryan and families, you have our sympathy in the loss of your dear mother....Karen and Allen"
