In loving memory of

Jean Elizabeth Cencic
January 6, 1932 - June 9, 2018

Madison - Jean Elizabeth Schleicher was born on January 6, 1932, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, and died on June 9th, 2018, at the University Hospital after suffering a stroke.

She was the fourth child born to Frederick and Anna Schleicher (Morschauser). Jean attended Doty/Longfellow Elementary School and grew up on Emerald Street in Madison. She graduated from West High School, and while attending school, met a good-looking sailor; William (Bill) Cencic, and they were married on May 20, 1950, at St. James Catholic Church in Madison.

Jean worked at the laundry on Park Street, and then stayed at home to raise her family of four girls. She began her career at the Motor Vehicle Department in 1965 and remained there for over thirty years. Jean's greatest joy in life was her family. She loved seasonal decorating and took great pride in the appearance of her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, sister, Ruth Drewes, and brothers, Raymond and Donald Schleicher. She is survived by her four daughters, Kathy (Ed) Brandt, Paula (Brian) Wermich, Carol (Kevin) Rommelfanger, Mary (Rick) Bennett, six grandchildren; Matt (Jess) Wermich, Stephanie (Tony) O'Rourke, Jennifer (Vikas) Goel, Lindsay (Jim) Trustem, Charles (Eva) Bennett, Billy (Molly) Bennett, and ten great-grandchildren, Aiden Wermich, Lilianna and Lucy O'Rourke, Rylan and Jackson Bennett, Rickey and Kai Bennett, and Krishna, Maya and Anya Goel.

The family would like to thank Drs. Catherine James and Jaya Krishna for their compassionate care of our mother. In addition, we would like to thank Meriter ED and UW Hospital doctors and staff, B6/6 neurosciences, and the Palliative Care Unit.

Per Jean's wishes, there will be no service, and a private family burial will take place. She will be interred next to Bill, whom she missed every day. In lieu of flowers or memorials, please spread kindness among the elderly; be it your parents, family member, neighbor, or friend.

"I met Jean and Bill through my mom, Gladys Braeger, who had a little craft shop in her home. I think that Jean was probably her best customer, and although Jean was closer to my age, they became friends. I remember Jean as being a very thoughtful person. She sent me a special "grandma" card when my first grandson was born. She called to let me know when Bill became ill and needed more care than she could give him. She also called me this spring to see if I wanted to stop over and see all of my mom's crafts that she had. She later called again and told me not to come because her street was all torn up, and that she would get back to me. That was the last time I spoke to her, and I am so sorry that I didn't follow up on it. She was such a nice person and was so proud of her girls. I think that many years ago one of her daughters cleaned for my son, Randy. Please accept my condolences to the family. Hugs to you all, Barbara Reilly"
