In loving memory of

David Benz
May 17, 1945 - June 26, 2018

David Dean Benz was born May 17, 1945 in Sibley, Iowa, the son of Russell Roy and Henrietta (Elgersma) Benz. David grew up in Melvin, Iowa, and graduated from Melvin High School in 1963. Later, he attended Iowa Lakes Community College graduating in 1980.

David worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and United Suppliers. He received his commercial driver's license and worked for multiple people and places driving "big rigs" including: Firkins Trucking, Larry Devon, Laird Trucking, McDevitt, Terra and SkyJack, Mfg. His final job was driving for Hartog.

David enjoyed visiting, camping, playing cards, gardening, Kawasaki motorcycles and John Deere tractors. He loved his cats, kittens and chickens. There wasn't a place in the U.S. that he hadn't driven his truck to. The Atlanta Braves were top of his sports list. He took great pleasure in teasing everyone he met. More than anything, David loved his family, and he treasured the time he was able to have watching his grandchildren and great-grandchild.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard. He was a volunteer for the Melvin Fire Department, and the Friends of Mallard. He was a boy scout leader and former member of the Jaycee's.

On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, David passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.
David was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Mary Ellen of Mallard; son, Todd Benz (Shannon) of Panama City, FL and Jody Condon (Tony) of Estherville, IA; grandchildren: Cody Benz of Dublin, GA, Tony Condon, II (Leah) of Wichita, KS, Amy Rowles (Matt) of Colorado Springs, CO and their children: James and baby, Andrew Condon of Estherville and Josie Condon of Estherville; his brother, Larry Benz (Sue) and their three children; his sister, Karen Gonzales (Chuck); his aunt, Helen Miller of Hartley; special friends, Brett and Shell Iwen and children, also the Hartog Elevator Families; friends of his children - all considered family and still referred to Mary Ellen and him, as mom and dad.
