Betty Harms, 90 of Marble Rock, died Monday, June 25, 2018 at her home.
Betty Jeanne Swant Harms was born June 24, 1928 in Marble Rock. She was the only child of Cecil and Frances (Schaefer) Swant. She was baptized and later joined the United Methodist Church in 1938. She graduated from Marble Rock High School and Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa). She taught in the primary grades in the Elma and Floyd Public Schools, and third grade at St. Patrick's Parochial School in Dougherty until the closing in 1973.
On June 16, 1948, she was united in marriage to Don Harms. To this union three children were born, Steven and twins, Dennis and Donnice (Doni).
Betty enjoyed most of all being with her immediate family. She looked forward to get-togethers, especially at Christmas, which were extra-special. She liked collecting things and had many collections, the largest being one of "Pigs". She also liked dancing, especially to the Big Bands at the Surf and the Buddy Holly Tributes, traveling, exercising, cards, crossword puzzles,, playing games, eating out, her cats and dogs, flowers, watching birds and life in general.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her best friend and husband Don.
Surviving are her three children, Steve (Louise) of Chicago, Illinois; Dennis (Randi) of Waco, Texas, and Doni Parker of Clear Lake, She is also survived by two grandsons, who have always been extra close in distance and heart. Jason (Karla, like a granddaughter) Parker, with their children Carson and Bella Parker; and James (Jim) Parker, who spent a number of years caring for his grandparents. Other surviving grandchildren are Stefanie (Tyler) Martin and their children Ty, Macie and Koehler Martin; Heather (Josh) Clark, and their children Matthew, Lainey, and Owen Clark; and grandson, Zachary (Jennifer) and their children Kannon and Beckett Harms. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She also leaves "Special" friends Theresa Frank and Teresa Thomas, who were important in her life, as well as Jean Harms.
Her wishes were to have no formal services and be cremated with a private memorial service held at a later date.
