'Dixie' was born on June 6, 1924, in Muscatine, the son of Harry L. and Myrtle L. Haney Howell. He was a 1942 graduate from St. Mathias High School, and joined the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He married Murna A. Carter on November 8, 1948, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2004.

Dixie had many jobs in his life, including bartending at Ina Mae's, delivering meat for C.E. Richards and Sons, Innkeeper at the Holiday Inn in Muscatine, and a salesman for Krieger's, Iowa Road Builders, and Farner-Bocken.

Dixie was an avid golfer throughout his life. At age 85, he shot his age, which was quite an accomplishment. He passed his love for golf to his children and grandchildren. He loved his Tuesday morning coffee with his friends at McDonalds.

Dixie will be missed by his children, Tom (Pam) Howell of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, Tony (Deb) Howell, Teresa (Jauquin) Chavarria of Muscatine, and Tim Howell of Wilton; grandchildren, Jordan (Amanda) Howell, Nate (Cassie) Howell, Makahla Howell, Barry Chavarria, Brad Chavarria, Melissa Chavarria, Christina Chavarria, and Jared Howell; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Elwood 'Roger' Howell and Mary Ann Liddy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Robert, Wayne, Don, and Jerry Howell and Norma Hartley.

"Dear Howell Family, I got to know Murna and Dixie as neighbors. They were part of a great group of my mom's friends that also became my friends. My wish to you is to find comfort in the memories. May the peace of the Lord be with you all! "
