Richard George Rudi Henly
September 17, 1966 - July 13, 2018

The photograph above of Richard and I (his wife) was taken on 26 June 2018. Richard G. R. Henly was a lovely Englishman. Born on 17 September 1966 in Chippenham, Wiltshire, UK. Richard passed away suddenly on 3 July 2018 of natural causes in Madison, WI. He was a Liverpool Football Club supporter since the age of five. Now I am a Liverpool supporter. We were also following England in the World Cup. Richard attended college in Trowbridge, UK pursuing building design, drainage and architectural graphics. All of which he exceled brilliantly. Richard and I met while we were working for the architectural firm RHWL in London, England in the late 1980's early 1990's. Due to the low volume of architectural projects, RHWL downsized and we were both made redundant. Employment seemed more prevalent in Madison, WI, so we decided to move to Madison. We were married on 5 November 1996. On this Tuesday, events were happening in both of our countries: Britain celebrated Guy Fawkes Day with fireworks and bonfires, looking back at Fawkes' failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605; it was also a presidential election day. We were married in the Madison Court House by Judge Angela Bartell. Richard was an avid reader. He loved history, especially the period of WWII. He loved trees. He planted a Scots Pine and a Horse Chestnut in his back garden. Every year, we would venture across the pond for a month, and travel to our farm in Princeton, MO. The past ten years he helped manage the farm in Missouri. He used his graphic and computer skills to assist with farm needs. This included design of field layouts, recording farm financial transactions, assisting with the farm and family's annual income tax reports, and in help make management decisions for the farm. As for music, he enjoyed punk rock. The Damned was one of his favourite bands. He also did enjoy Simon and Garfunkel, and Gerry and the Pacemakers who sung "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Liverpool Football Club's anthem). He was the lead vocalist for "White Elephants Over Jamaica," a band in Devizes, UK. We have both been to Anfield (Liverpool's ground) and Green Bay Packer's Lambeau Field. In November 2016, we flew back from the UK. Richard was quite ill and we discovered he had esophageal cancer. In March 2018, his scans were good. In May, I too became a cancer patient at UW Hospital. Despite our illnesses, we continued enjoying our lives together! This past year and a half, every evening we would listen to audio books by Patterson, Grisham, Silva, Connelly, and even got through "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. "You cannot buy a pint in the library," was one of Richard's famous quotations when asked why we read books in the pub. Richard especially enjoyed one-on-one conversations on any subject with people of all ages. He will be missed by many around the world, especially me. We were a couple who never said "I love you" because we did not have to. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Jo (Quigley) Henly. Survivors include his wife Rebecca, his brother Tim Henly (Devizes), several cousins in and around Arbroath Scotland, his parents-in-law Robert and Phyllis Kauffman (Madison), sister-in-all Ellen (Remmert) Borst (Madison), and two nephews Alex and Ian Campbell (Princeton, MO). A celebration for Richard will be held on Sunday, 29 July 2018, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, at the UW's Union Terrace on Lake Mendota.
