Dallas Andrew Havick

Dallas Andrew Havick, the son of Minor William and Sylvia Edna (Copeland) Havick, was born on November 22, 1916, in rural Harlan, Iowa. He attended country schools and graduated from Harlan High School in 1934. Following graduation, Dallas attended Boyles Business College in Omaha, Nebraska, for a year. In 1939, he opened his own trucking business.
On June 18, 1941, Dallas married Jeannette Katherine Sorensen at their rural Harlan home. As a member of the United States Army, he served in the European Theater from 1942-1945. After Dallas' discharge from the Army, the couple farmed rented land in Cuppy's Grove, Iowa, until 1950, when they bought a farm in Jackson Township from his mother-in-law, Anna Sorensen. In addition to farming, Dallas resumed his trucking business in 1954; he continued trucking until 1973. In 1975, he began driving for SW Iowa Transit, and held that position until 1990. After Jeannette's death on March 28, 2008, Dallas stayed on the farm until 2011, when he moved into Harlan.
Dallas loved Shelby County, Iowa, and lived his entire life there. He remained active after his retirement, collecting model cars and tractors. Dallas had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to visit with people.
Dallas A. Havick died on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. He had reached the age of 101 years, 4 months, and 26 days.
Dallas was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeannette Katherine Havick; two brothers, Jean Havick and Robert Havick; one sister, Virginia Schnack; one son-in-law, Melvin Dinesen; and one granddaughter, Nancy Boos. He is survived by one daughter, Janis Dinesen of Harlan, Iowa; one son, David (Kim) Havick of Altoona, Iowa; four grandchildren, Amy (Robert) Heflin of Harlan, Iowa, Jason (Tracy) Dinesen of Indianola, Iowa, Joel (Sarah) Havick of Norwalk, Iowa, and Melody Havick of Ankeny, Iowa; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, with David Havick leading the service. Helen Warren and Dave Riley served as musicians. Casket bearers were Tom Lund, Joel Havick, Robert Heflin, Randy Ouren, Jason Dinesen, and Galan Johannsen. Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery, Jacksonville, Iowa.
