Dr. Joseph W. Shoemaker
December 2, 1934 - October 3, 2018

Dr. Joseph William Shoemaker, DDS, 83, of Carmel, departed this life on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. Joe was born on December 2, 1934 in Marion, IN to the late Joseph Francis and Marie (Geske) Shoemaker. He received a degree in engineering from Purdue University and then earned his DDS from the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force Reserves.
Dr. Shoemaker began his dental practice in 1964 providing many years of meticulous care for his patients before retiring in 2012. He was a member of the American Dental Association and was recognized as a Fifty Year member of the Indiana Dental Association in 2014. Joe was also a member of the Scottish Rite Cathedral and the Carmel Christian Church. After growing up on a farm in Middletown, IN, he had a special appreciation for all things related to the natural world and was especially fond of bird watching.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Louise Shoemaker. He is survived by his loving family, Dr. Robert (Karen) Shoemaker, Dr. Joseph (Suzi) Shoemaker, James Hurley, and Julie (Mark) Barbato; seven grateful grandchildren; seven precious great-grandchildren and a host of appreciative friends, patients, and colleagues. The family wishes to extend a huge thank you to the staff of Sunrise on Old Meridian for their incredible compassion and care over the past six years and to Great Lakes Hospice Services for their assistance, dedication and comfort during the last year.
Visitation will be from 11:00 - 12:00 on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Leppert Mortuary - Smith Carmel Chapel, 900 N. Rangeline Rd. A private service and internment follows at Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
