Verna Wakefield

Verna Louise Wakefield, age 73, of Mystic, died April 30, 2007 at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Verna was born September 11, 1933, the daughter of Glen and Bertha (Howk) Overturf in Wapello County. Verna graduated from Moravia High School in 1950. She married Charles Wakefield on December 30, 1949 in Moravia, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2006. Verna worked for Mercy Hospital, City of Centerville, Appanoose County Treasurer's Office, SIEDA and helped her husband farm. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, UMW Circle, and the Faith United Methodist Church. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Verna is survived by two daughters, Sherry (Michael) Murphy of Centerville, IA, Cindy Donald of Henderson, NV; two sons, Steve (Michele) Wakefield of Omaha, NE, Michael Wakefield of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Nathan (Carina) Donald of Las Vegas, NV, Jason (Kelly) Murphy of Centerville, IA, Justin Donald of Henderson, NV, Jennifer (Brandon) Frampton of Iowa City, IA, J.T. (Heather) Murphy of Ames, IA, Nicole Donald of Reno, NV, Skye Wakefield of Omaha, NE, Mikayla Wakefield of Stronghurst, IL, Megan Wakefield of Stronghurst, IL, and Sara Wakefield of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren, Madison and Caleb Murphy of Centerville, IA, and Austin Donald of Henderson, NV; siblings, Velma (Dean) Tissue Sumner, IA, Wilma (Bob) Scieszinski of Des Moines, IA, Kay (Roger) White of Lincoln, NE, Judy (Clarence) Ballanger of Moravia, IA; sister-in-laws, Karen Overturf of Centerville, IA, Jewell Strong of Cedar Rapids, IA, Dixie (Wendell) Phillips of Hollister, MO, Brother-in-laws, Howard Spencer of Council Bluffs, IA, and Ferrell Purvis of Centerville, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles; parents, Glen and Bertha Overturf and brothers, Russell, Rex and Ronald Overturf.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, May 4, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Centerville with Pastor Dianne Christopher officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at the Concord Cemetery, Mystic, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday evening at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, Centerville. A Memorial has been established to either the First United Methodist Church or the Concord Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, IA 52544.
