Andrew W. Gohlinghorst, Sr., age 90, of Council Bluffs, passed away October 6, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Home. Andy was born January 3, 1928 in Council Bluffs to the late Andrew and Helen (Huebner) Gohlinghorst. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1945 and attended Iowa State University for two years. Andy married JoAnn Varner on May 5, 1950. They were blessed with three children, Stephanie, Andrew, Jr. and Martin. Andy owned and operated Gohlinghorst Plumbing for 40 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served for many years as superintendent of their Sunday School; past-president of the Council Bluffs Plumbing Board; fundraiser for Bethany Lutheran Home and a volunteer at Children's Square. Andy was an avid gardener and golfer. In addition to his parents, Andy was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Andy is survived by his wife of 68 years, JoAnn Gohlinghorst; sons, Andrew (Monica) Gohlinghorst, Jr., all of Council Bluffs, Martin Gohlinghorst of St. Joseph, Missouri; daughter, Stephanie (Craig) Lainson of Council Bluffs; 2 grandchildren, Jamie Lainson and Ally (Michael) Hotze; 3 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Mel (Marilyn) Varner of Seward, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Corrine Varner and friend, Bernie Kamarad of Omaha; nieces and nephews.
