Alan Dale Weets age 74 of Mechanicsville Iowa died on Thursday November 2 2006 in his home surrounded by his family from complications of chronic lung disease.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 A.M. Monday November 62006.0 from the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Stransky officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 P.M. on Sunday November 52006.0 from the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery Maquoketa Iowa. The Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa is in charge of the arrangements.
Alan was born the fourth child of William and Alvina (Luett) Weets near Buckhorn in rural Jackson County Iowa on September 17 1932. He graduated from Lost Nation High School as salutatorian of his class. Alan and Mary Herkelmann were married on September 21 1952 at the Elwood United Methodist Church. They lived in Lost Nation and Springdale until moving to the Lester Nicoll farm south of Mechanicsville in March of 1956.
A farmer his entire life Alan participated in the local and Iowa Master's corn yield contests sponsored by the Jaycees was selected as Outstanding Young Farmer by the Jaycees in 1959 was a member of the Farm Bureau Soybean Association and sold Garst Seed Corn for twenty years. Alan remembered waiting at the end of the cornfield with horses and buckboard for the sun to come up to pick corn at the age of ten. He bought his first lamb at the age of twelve and won his first calf in a 4-H calf scramble at the fair at the age of sixteen. Alan fed cattle hogs and thousands of sheep during his life with the sheep arriving in Mechanicsville by railroad car from Wyoming and Texas.
As a member of the United Methodist Church Alan served on the Board of Trustees and co-chaired the building committee for the educational wing.
He was always interested in what his children and grandchildren were doing and loved collecting arrowheads boating fishing with his buddy Dave Wilken in Canada and finally stopped water skiing at the age of sixty-five. He and Mary spent the last several winters in Florida Texas and Arizona.
Alan will be remembered by his family as a hard worker but also as a proud and loving husband father grandfather and great-grandfather who loved to tease and play jokes on people.
He is survived by his wife Mary seven children Mary Beth (Rob) Bixler Mt. Pleasant Barbara (Michael) Caudill Solon Carl (Cathy) Weets Cooper TX Alan Steven (Teresa) Weets Mechanicsville Ben Weets Tipton Janine (Kevin) Sulzner Anamosa and Susan (Adam) Robinson Mechanicsville; fifteen grandchildren Brandi & Aaron Bixler Ontario Caudill Katie & Kristi Weets Alan J. Sally & Stacey Weets Lauren & William Weets Christopher (Stephanie) Nathan & Jacob Sulzner and Sarah & Daniel Robinson; two great-granddaughters Abigail & Aicia Bixler; three brothers William (Janette) Weets Harold (Dolores) Weets and Darrell Weets; and two sisters-in-law Helen Kinrade and Zelda (Burt) Dostal. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Virginia Hein and Lenora Weets.
An Alan Dale Weets Memorial Fund has been established.
