Shirley Christensen, 87, of Humboldt passed away on Monday, April 22, 2019, at the West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM, and funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 25, at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Shirley Lou Mann was born December 4, 1931 at Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Earl and Marjorie (Jergens) Mann. She grew up in Dakota City, Iowa, and graduated from Humboldt High School. She was an excellent singer, and performed in many musicals during those high school years. She then attended Iowa State Teachers' College in Cedar Falls, and earned her teaching certificate in 1952. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Donald Christensen, on September 5, 1954. "Chris" and Shirley began their married lives together in Mason City, but they soon returned home to Humboldt with son Bryan in tow. Melissa came along a few years later and their family was complete. Over the years, Shirley kept busy taking care of the kids, and following their many activities. She enjoyed the simple things in life, coffee with family, good friends and neighbors, fishing (and shopping) trips to Minnesota, attending countless sporting events and dance recitals to support her children and eventually her grandchildren, and yearly fall getaways with her girls. Chris and Shirley also enjoyed many road trips throughout Iowa with the Humboldt Model A Club. In her spare time, Shirley loved to read, and she never turned down an invitation for a shopping trip. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Shirley is survived by a family who will miss her kind, gentle presence and witty sense of humor. They include her son Bryan and his wife Gloria, her daughter Melissa, her grandchildren, Katie (Joe) Reimers and Kyle (Jenna) Christensen, and her great-grandchildren Emersen, Ivy, Scout, Olive, Tripp and Rhett. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 57 years, Chris.
