Fredrick "Fritz" Philipps

FREDRICK B. PHILIPPS "FRITZ"

Mr. Fred Philipps, a longtime resident of Port Washington and currently a resident at Harbor Club, passed away Tuesday afternoon surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old. Fredrick was born on January 18, 1913.
After school and a stint on a Great Lakes ship, Fritz was united in marriage with Henrietta Erlwig on June 27, 1936 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Washington. The couple settled down to raise a family and in 1945 Fritz took a job as a mechanic at the Columbia Garage, most recently J.L. Schmidt Garage. He stayed until retirement and work part-time for many years after. Mr. Philipps' passion was working on and restoring cars and anything with a combustion engine. He worked on the Midget race cars that were run through Schmidt Garage, was a former member of the Buick Riviera Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening while he was able. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta of Port Washington and their nine children: Norman (Carol) Philipps of Peshtigo, Lloyd (Marilyn) Philipps of California, LeRoy "Butch" (the late Darleen) Philipps of Bloomer, Fredrick "Fritz" (Gale) Philipps of Port Washington, Deanne (Paul) Gallun of Newberg, Judy Johnson of Port Washington, the late Jill Smith, Marilyn Barsch of Port Washington and Kenneth Philipps of Colorado. He is further survived by 29 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 1 sister Sylvia Bley of Port Washington, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and his faithful companion Baron. He is preceded in death by 1 daughter, Jill Smith, 4 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Stevie, Peter and Chris, 1 brother, Arnold and 1 sister Elizabeth. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 7th, at 2PM at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave. (Hwy 33 & LL) in Port Washington. Pastor Don Zahurance will officiate. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held from 12-2PM Saturday at the Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
