ROMAN M. GONWA


Roman "Romie" Gonwa, age 79 years of 902 North St., Belgium died Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Mequon. He was born August 9, 1928 in the Town of Fredonia, son of the late Nicholas and Adelia Wetor Gonwa. On March 28, 1951, while serving in the U.S. Army, he married Virginella Kleckner at Holy Cross Catholic Church in the Town of Belgium. Roman worked as a carpenter/expeditor until retiring. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake Church, Belgium American Legion Post, VFW Post 5373, the Belgium Fire Department, Catholic Order of Foresters, served as Belgium Village President and Trustee and along with his wife, served as the Duke and Duchess of the Luxembourg Festival in 1999. He is survived by his wife Virginella, six children David (Gail) Gonwa of Belgium, Denis (Lynn) Gonwa of DePere, Ruth (Pat) Schultz of Madison, Judy (Barry) Effinger of Port Washington, Scott (Holly) Gonwa of Cedarburg and Mark (Tory) Gonwa of Belgium, 16 grandchildren Chad, Matt, Derek, Josh, Justin, Abby, Lindsay, Jake, Ashley, Carolyn, Nic, Brooke, Adam, Sabrina, Megan, and Garrett and 2 great grandchildren David and Gabrielle, one sister Dolores Kultgen of Belgium and two brothers Sylvan Gonwa of Phoenix, AZ and Norbert (Lorraine) Gonwa of West Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Melvin and three sisters Myrtle Kleckner, Harriet Prom and Audrey Gonwa. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 27, 11 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, Lake Church, preceded by family rites at 10:30 AM at the Eernisse Funeral Home, Belgium. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation at the Funeral Home Sunday from 4-8 PM and on Monday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM. American Legion and VFW walk-thru Sunday at 7 PM. The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers.
