James joined the United States Marine Corps in 1956 and retired in 1976. After his retirement from the Marines he was a martial arts instructor for many years. He also worked for and retired from the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier. James was also a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Greeley.
