Mary Margaret Hawkins was born on February 10, 1934 in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of William and Lora (Patrick) Hawkins.   She graduated from Seymour High School in 1956, where she had been an accomplished basketball player, and Iowa State Teachers College, now known as University of Northern Iowa.  She married Raymond Doyne on December 26, 1955 in Davenport, Iowa; he preceded her in death on February 28, 2005.

Mary was a beloved teacher in the Clinton Community Schools, as well as, overseas at the Nagoya International School, Japan and Taipei American School, Taiwan, for over 35 years. Mary dedicated her career to K-3, to ensure that every child who spent time in her classroom would learn to love the process of learning, and develop the skills to carry the student through life.

Mary was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, as well as, the Clinton Community as a whole. She lived every day to its fullest. Her favorite things included; reading, gardening, going to the movies with friends, and traveling the world with family while dining on fine cuisine, though she never passed up a good hot dog or piece of pizza. Mary loved the companionship of dogs. Later in life when it was too much to care fulltime for one on her own, she was "grandma" to everyone's, even having the pups stay for sleepovers. Despite the diagnosis of lung disease later in life, she maintained the discipline to remain active, spending a minimum of four days a week, at the Clinton YWCA to stay fit both physically, by joining in exercise classes, and mentally, by participating in a number social activities.

Mary is survived by her daughters: Ann (Kenneth) Kinkaid of Fulton, Illinois, Barbara (Jay Brown) Doyne of Viera, Florida; two grandchildren: Mark (Erin) Hogan, Jr. of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Samantha Brown who is currently attending Hamilton College;  and her two sisters: Phyllis Cain of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and Betty Buckallew of Greensville, South Carolina.   In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, brother Bill Hawkins, and an infant daughter.

Memorials can be made to the Zion Lutheran Church or the Clinton YWCA.
