Ellen Lucille Arntson Marcy was born September 10, 1926, in Windom, Minnesota, to Norwegian immigrant parents, John & Inga Arntson. The middle child among three sisters and one brother, she attended the Windom Public Schools, and subsequently continued her education as a student of the Art Institute in Minneapolis. She would remain in the City for some time thereafter, working as a studio artist for Donaldson's department store.
When the GI's returned home post-war, a chance meeting brought Vernon Richard Marcy into her life, and the two were married in the American Lutheran Church in Windom on October 26, 1947. They would then become the parents of six children: Mary Jo, Don, Bill, Susan, Tom, and Deb, and would raise their family on the Marcy farm near Bergen. School, church and 4-H activities would take center stage as the kids grew, but it was anything but a typical household - Ellen instilled in her offspring a love of the arts and an appreciation of music, and it was not unusual for the siblings to come off the school bus to find her listening to broadway musicals while her brush stroked the canvas in front of her.
Ellen was especially proud of her Norwegian heritage, and enjoyed traveling to Norway with two of her sisters to meet relatives in their parents' homeland. Living in the Scandinavian-rich Bergen area also brought ample opportunity for Ellen to contribute her rosemaling talents, or lend cooking skills to the numerous lutefisk and lefse dinners held annually. Many hours were spent, as well, on various committees of the First Presbyterian Church in Windom, and as a member of their Dorcas Circle.
Ellen would overcome obstacles in her health throughout her lifetime, the most dramatic of which was suffering rheumatic fever as a child, and the setback of a stroke in her mid-70's that rendered her homebound for the last few years. A very private, strong-willed person, Ellen retained her independent living by way of the pure grace and determination of her trusted caregivers, Dianne Witt and staff, along with the loving support of her home health aide, Jody Horkey.
Ellen would peacefully leave this world on May 27, 2011; because of the faith that she carried within her, we are confident that Ellen has rejoined her husband, Richard, her beloved sister, Jeanette, and her brother, Jacob, and she will grieve for them no more. In her passing, Ellen leaves her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, oldest sister, Gladys Meyers, youngest sister, Norma Trump, and her Godson, Bradley Bennett, to celebrate her life.
