Dean received his education in the Windom Public Schools; graduating in the Class of 1952. After graduating, Dean enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Dean and Barb faithfully owned and operated the business for over twenty-five years before retiring. After retiring, Dean and Barb continued to live in Windom. On early Saturday morning, September 22nd, 2007, Dean passed away unexpectedly at his home in Windom at the age of 74.
